Abstract:

We are all very aware of technologies that have changed our lives - the microprocessor, the jet engine, the mobile phone, etc.. There are also, however, technologies that were going to change our lives, or at least were expected to succeed, that disappeared instead. This project will look at such technologies - ones that were developed but failed to find a market, were predicted but never materialised, appeared but had no real impact. It will look at the reasons behind these failures: technical, financial, social, ., and consider what lessons they offer for predicting and planning the technologies of our future.
